Downsizing is equal parts logistics and emotions, so having a clear plan in place will help you achieve your goals. Here’s a simple checklist for you to consider:
- It’s helpful if you know the size of the new place you are moving to. Size of the rooms, closet space, etc.
A simple rule; if it doesn ‘t have a place in the new house, it doesn’t come (but may go to storage for the interim)
- Give yourself permission to let go of things. Decide what matters most (comfort, hobbies, family items) and the rest make a plan.
- Work room by room. This can simplify and not overwhelm. Create 5 piles;
Keep, Sell, Donate, Give Away (family or friends) and Trash/Recycle
- Start simple; Linen closets, bathrooms, pantry, laundry room, closets, basement storage.
- A helpful tip can be using Sticky Notes or Blue Painter tape to mark bigger items you want to “take” or “go to storage”. Having boxes and/or storage bins on hand during the cleaning/sorting stage is important.
- Remember that in your new space, you might not need multiples of kitchen, bath and bedroom items b/c the space is smaller.
- Clothes closets can be an easy target; do you wear most of the items or just a handful. Clothes can be donated to local charities in need and easily dropped off in boxes or bags.
- Sentimental Items should be handled carefully and boxed up and labeled so EVERYONE knows they are keepsakes and meaningful.
- Consider selling (FB Marketplace) or donating things you have no need for any longer.
- Be sure to talk with your family members about any heirlooms they wish to keep and set those aside with a label.
Work on these items in 2-3 hour increments, so as not to overwhelm you. Moving is an emotional process and it’s okay to feel that.
